Mommy – are we there yet??

“Mommy, are we there yet?”

By Tessa at the Lord Elgin

With summer vacation and road trips on the horizon this summer it made me think of how my generation of parents have turned to “road trip entertainment” for help to keep kids occupied during these times.  My daughter has become so accustomed to watching the i-pad during car rides that we can barely make it to the grocery store without her chanting the ever familiar whine: “mommy are we there yet?”  And I’m not the only one!  The majority of my friends and neighbours have the built-in tv/sound system set up in their cars – these systems rivalling the ones I have in my own living room!

When I was a kid this technology did not exist (especially in cars) and we were forced to look out the window and read novels (heaven forbid!).

This summer I have set a new goal for myself: to leave the i-pad at home and ask my daughter to play the old car games, read books and sing songs.  It will allow us to enjoy each other as well as the scenery of our beautiful city and province as we drive across Ontario this summer.  After all, there’s so much to enjoy!
