by Aly – the Intern
As a public relations student at Algonquin College, I can tell you that most of us start looking forward to our internship before we even start the program.
So, when my original placement fell through at the last minute, I was left feeling extremely nervous about whether or not I would be able to find somewhere that would take me in on such short notice.
That’s when my professor connected me with Ann Meelker at the Lord Elgin Hotel. I was thrilled at the opportunity to work in such an iconic location, and was overjoyed to hear that Ann was open to the possibility of taking me in!
The day of my interview was also the first time I had ever been inside the Lord Elgin. Upon walking in, a valet greeted me with a smile, and as I spoke to the front desk, I realized that the Lord Elgin has one of the most welcoming staff I’ve ever come across. And if that wasn’t enough to make me want to intern here – there’s a Starbucks right in the building!
After my meeting with Ann, I knew that the Lord Elgin was the right place for me, and luckily Ann thought so too – because she offered me the internship on the spot!
Since January, I have had the pleasure of working alongside the Lord Elgin’s sales team, who have shown me incredible kindness and have taught me so much.
I’ve had so many great experiences working here, from attending the city’s best Winterlude launch party, to escorting three brides to their wedding all in one day, there truly has never been a dull moment for me at the Lord Elgin.
But above all, the most meaningful experience was getting to know the wonderful staff that works tirelessly to make the Lord Elgin so great. Be it a housekeeper, a reservations agent or even a member of the Starbucks team (who deserve a special mention for memorizing my order) every member of the Lord Elgin team has a heart of gold, and though my time here has been short, I will always have fond memories of the months I spent here.
So, much like my time here, I’ll keep this blog post short and sweet and just say THANK YOU! Thank you to Ann for her endless patience, and for giving me this wonderful opportunity! Thank you to Amber, who is often referred to as the sunshine girl, for always bringing a smile to my face. Thank you to Liz for the endless style inspiration. Thank you to Andrew for having an answer to all of my questions. Thank you to Tessa, who sat closest to me, for always sharing stories and listening to mine. And thank you to the entire Lord Elgin team, for making me feel like a part of their family since the moment I walked in.
