Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Ontario

Canada Day 2024

There is nowhere like the Nation’s Capital – Ottawa to celebrate Canada’s Birthday Party and staying at the Lord Elgin Hotel.  Located along Ottawa’s Ceremonial boulevard, the Lord Elgin provides the best vantage point for this very special birthday party!

Canada’s Capital Region comes alive with national celebrations. Across the country, Canada Day is celebrated by participating in activities organized in the communities.  Parliament Hill has been the official Canada Day site for over 50 years. Due to the Centre Block Rehabilitation project, the Canada Day main stage will be moved to a new location just 1.5 km west of Parliament Hill at Lebreton Flats.

Starting at 9 am, a number of activities, animations and shows presented by Canadian artists will give you a chance to celebrate throughout the day.  You cannot miss the Tim Hortons Canada day fireworks that will ight up the sky as of 10pm.

For more information about the programming, visit the Canada Day website.

Canada Day Events:

9:45 am

Ceremonial Guard marches in front of the Lord Elgin on it’s way to Parliament Hill.

Bring your camera to capture colourful photos of soldiers in scarlet uniforms and bearskin hats, as they carry out precise drills to the music of a military band on Parliament Hill.

Daily from late June to late August, the impressive—and free—Changing of the Guard ceremony draws crowds to downtown Ottawa. If you arrive on the lawn of Parliament Hill by 9:45 a.m., you can hear an audio presentation in English and French that explains the symbolism, history and proceedings of the ceremony. Then listen—in the distance, you’ll hear soldiers and their band parading from the Cartier Square Drill Hall and along Elgin Street, right in front of the Lord Elgin Hotel.

With military precision, they’ll arrive on the Hill at precisely 10:00 a.m. Then, the Band of the Ceremonial Guard will provide music while the Guards are inspected and the Old Guard becomes the New Guard. The ceremony, modelled on one in London, England, dates back to 1959.

The Ceremonial Guard may cancel the ceremony due to inclement weather or precluding special events.

Daytime programming to be confirmed by May 30th, 2024.
